Jennifer Hudson joins cast of ‘Smash’

Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson will guest star when the NBC musical drama “Smash” returns with a two-hour episode titled “On Broadway/The Fallout” on Feb. 5 at 9 p.m.

Back from a successful run in Boston, Eileen (Anjelica Huston), Julia (Debra Messing) and Tom (Christian Borle) are blindsided by both personal and professional obstacles as they seek to take “Bombshell” to Broadway. Karen (Katherine McPhee) consults her new mentor, two-time Tony Award winner Veronica “Ronnie” Moore (Jennifer Hudson), as she finds herself on the brink of fame, but her success may come at cost to Ivy (Megan Hilty). A new talent (Jeremy Jordan) is discovered in an unexpected place. Meanwhile, Derek (Jack Davenport) copes with a damaging accusation.

Hudson, who was one of 12 “American Idol” finalists in 2004, is a Grammy Award winner, and won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2006 for her portrayal of Effie White in “Dreamgirls.” “She is like this huge Broadway star that everyone is aspiring to be,” Hudson says of her character, who warns up-and-comer Karen Cartwright, “Someone’s always waiting to take you down, honey. But if the work is good, they won’t be able to.” Thorsten Kaye, Brian d’Arcy James and Broadway icon Harvey Fierstein (“Hairspray,” “La Cage Aux Folles”) also guest star in the episode.

Now in its second season, Smash “celebrates the beauty and the heartbreak of the Broadway theater as it follows a cross-section of dreamers and schemers who all have one common desire — the ultimate success — to be a smash!”

Four-time Tony winner Liza Minnelli and Broadway veterans Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Dreamgirls”) and Jesse L. Martin (“Rent”) will also guest star on the show this season, and Martin says “I’m thrilled beyond belief to be here on the set of ‘Smash.’ Scott, my character, and Julia, Debra Messing’s character, have a history. I don’t know if it was professional. I don’t know if it was romantic. What I am told is that we will get thick in it!” “Smash” resumes in its regular day and time on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 10 p.m.
