Happy 32nd anniversary to Karen, Dean Henry

Karen and Dean Henry celebrated their summer anniversary late last month. The couple met at the Parkview Court Apartments in Yeadon, where they both lived, in 1977. Karen had moved from Dayton, Ohio, to take a job as an educational consultant while Dean moved from West Philadelphia into his first apartment. Dean explains that the apartment complex was so large he didn’t know where Karen lived at first. They would smile and wave to each other for some time before he devised a plan to finally meet her. He left a note on her car windshield in the apartment complex; she called to arrange a time to meet and the rest is history.

The couple was married on June 28, 1980, at the bride’s parents’ house in their expansive backyard. No one who attended the wedding will ever forget it. Just as the nuptials were to begin, a tornado warning flashed across the local television screens. However, the wedding went on as planned, albeit with some help from the special prayers of the two officiating ministers for the rain to hold off until it was over. The ceremony was completed and the couple had just walked under the patio roof when the sky let loose. The next day, the front page of the Dayton newspaper proclaimed “Worst Rain in 40 Years!”

Karen loves decorating, entertaining small groups and cooking. She is a volunteer with Friends Fitness Center in Chester County, where the couple has lived for 26 years. She worked as a teacher in Ohio, the U.S. Virgin Islands and New York., N.Y., before working for a series of book publishing companies. She graduated from Central State University and Bank Street College, where she majored in elementary education. She retired as an educational sales consultant for Houghton Mifflin Co. in 1995 to care for her mother and two daughters.

Dean is an information technology professional who has worked for the Vanguard Group in Malvern for 15 years. A graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and La Salle University, Dean has volunteered extensively for his alma maters, as well as for the local United Way and the Tredyffrin-Easttown Educational Foundation and School District.

He enjoys gadgets, photography and genealogy. Dean is a member of the African American Genealogy Group, the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania and the National Genealogical Society. His recently launched a business, Family Pearl, specializing in family history research, family connections and media and oral history recording.

Karen and Dean enjoy their life together after 32 years of raising two daughters. Their older daughter, Kristen Tini, was married in 2010 to Joey Tini. Little did I know Dean and Karen’s beautiful love story when I wrote about Kristen’s and Joey’s wedding for The Tribune. Kristen is a data analyst for Universal Cos. in Philadelphia. Their younger daughter, Angela Henry, lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., and works in New York City as a curriculum coordinator for the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. Empty-nesters Karen and Dean share their home with their 16-year-old dog, a Bichon Frise named Kika.

For the Henrys, life has been a series of blessings and the couple is grateful for the great example their parents set for them. Karen’s parents were married 50 years before her father passed away in 1985, and Dean’s parents have been married for 67 years.

May Dean and Karen continue to be blessed with love, peace and contentment, a beautiful family legacy!
