Kenyatta Norris, Maurice O. Patterson engaged

Kenyatta Michelle Norris, 28, of the Wynnfield Heights section of Philadelphia, is engaged to Maurice O. Patterson, 27, of Mt. Airy. Congratulations to the lovely couple and their families. The bride’s parents are Kenny Berry and Sonia Jenkins, and grandparents are the Rev. R. Jeremiah Norris and Lora Norris, who raised Kenyatta. Maurice’s parents are Mack Patterson and Sharon Baxter-Patterson.

Kenyatta studied instrumental music at the High School for Creative and Performing Arts in Philadelphia. She graduated from Temple University with a degree in education and earned her master’s of education from Eastern University. The bride-to-be is currently employed at Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School as a kindergarten teacher.

Maurice grew up in Philadelphia’s Mt. Airy neighborhood. He is the son of Mack Patterson and Sharon Baxter-Patterson. Kenyatta’s future husband attended boarding school at Scotland School for Veterans’ Children from third to 12th grade. Maurice graduated from Temple University with a degree in education. He is also currently employed at Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School as the lower school dean of students.

The couple met in August 2009 when they began working at Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School. They were introduced by Kenyatta’s childhood friend, Isaiah Thomas. Their friendship and loving relationship blossomed following Isaiah’s introduction.

In August 2012, Maurice and Kenyatta decided to go shopping at the King of Prussia Mall. After shopping, they dined at nearby Maggiano’s Little Italy restaurant. Shortly after being seated at a table on the terrace, Maurice excused himself to prepare for a big surprise.

When he returned, he romantically began proposing to Kenyatta on bended knee. The initially speechless Kenyatta responded with a resounding “yes”! At that point, everyone on the terrace began to applaud, including Maurice.

Maurice then asked his fiancée to join him for yet another surprise. When they walked back into the restaurant and proceeded to the second level, friends and family greeted them. Kenyatta could no longer hold back her emotions and began to cry. “Our engagement immediately became an engagement party with loved ones,” she said.

Kenyatta is a member of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church. The couple will be married on July 13. The destination wedding will take place at the Moon Palace Resort and Spa in Cancun, Mexico. Plans are well underway. Family members and friends, including the bridal party, are excited about joining Kenyatta and Maurice on this very special occasion.

I look forward to sharing the special story of the future Mr. and Mrs. Maurice O. Patterson this summer.
