Wedding Story: Marie Broomer-Boyd, Ellwood Jones Jr.

Marie Broomer-Boyd and Ellwood Oscar Jones Jr. were married in a lovely, formal ceremony. Their wedding day, Oct. 13, 2012, was a perfectly sunny fall afternoon. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Sammie Logan III at St. Mary’s Fellowship Hall in Norfolk, Va. It was a very special moment when Marie was given away in marriage by her son, Khari S. Boyd.

The bride was elegant in a, cream-colored, full-length satin wedding gown accented with white pearls and sequins. Her accessories included gorgeous cream-colored satin shoes adorned with white pearls and cream-colored pearl satin three-quarter-length gloves.

The Bride

Marie, 71, is a native Philadelphian. She graduated from West Philadelphia High School in 1960. Marie honors the memories of her mother, the late Myrtle Patricia Kelly; stepfather, Charles Alonzo Kelly; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence (Marie) Toliver.

Marie attended William Penn Business Institute in Philadelphia. She left the city and made her home in Norfolk, where she attended Norfolk State University. In Norfolk, Marie worked for the Virginia with the state Department of Welfare. She retired in 2002 following a 32-year career as a judicial law judge hearings officer.

The Groom

Ellwood, 71, is also a native Philadelphian and a 1960 graduate of West Philadelphia High School. He is a Vietnam veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He attended Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas. Ellwood retired from the commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a claims examiner and job service representative in June 1999, with 34 years of service. Ellwood’s mother continues to reside in Philadelphia. His father was the late Ellwood O. Jones Sr.

How They Met and Reunited

Although the couple both graduated from West Philadelphia High School in January 1960, attended some of the same classes and enjoyed a casual friendship, they never dated. Marie and Ellwood were reunited in June 2010 at the 50th class reunion of West Philadelphia High School. There, they talked about their high school experiences as well as their current places in life.

Ellwood shared that he was a widower and Marie shared that she was divorced. They left the reunion with the promise to keep in touch. They kept their promises and did so via emails, telephone calls and several enjoyable trips that Marie made to her native Philadelphia.

The Wedding Party

Marie’s matrons of honor were Tiffany Boyd and Rene Claiborne. She was attended by bridesmaids: Laura Boone, Yvonne Snowden, Margaret May, Goldie Cromartie, Delores Shambley and Edwina Wilson. Ladies in waiting were Lulu Hicks and Anita Riddick. The bride’s attendants also included Morgan Boone as the junior bridesmaid and Nia Boyd as the lovely flower girl.

Ellwood’s sons, Ellwood Jones III and Terrence Jones, were the dutiful best men. Groomsmen were: Columbus Boone, Isaac Snowden III, William May, Willie Cromartie, David Shambley and Clarence Wilson. Isaiah Boyd was the responsible ring bearer.

The Proposal

After a 50-year separation, reunion and an incredible two-year courtship, Marie and Ellwood knew they wanted to become husband and wife. Ellwood lovingly proposed to Marie following a dinner date in September 2011. She was completely awed and surprised when he proposed. “Our rings were purchased on 9/9/11 and our engagement was official on 9/10/11,” Marie said. They immediately began to make plans for an October wedding.

Reflections of the Bride…in her own words

“When I made my entrance to walk down the white runner of the church, I looked at the faces of those in attendance and saw big smiles. Most of all, I felt beautiful when I saw Ellwood’s face. He was smiling and looking at me as if I was a dream. I saw the gleam in his eyes and knew that he was amazed at the woman who was slowly approaching him at the altar. I will never forget that wonderful day, ceremony, or the fact God gave me a wonderful and caring husband that I will cherish the rest of my life. Ellwood is a caring man and he selected just the right rings. They were perfect!”

The Reception

Two hundred guests attended the joyous wedding and reception. Many guests were from the Tidewater, Va. area. Other family members and friends traveled from Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.

The bride was amazing. Everyone was thrilled when Marie changed into a cream-colored illusion jacket accented in white pearls and sequins for the reception.

Marie said Ellwood was instrumental in the selection of the four-tiered, custom-designed wedding cake with assorted, flavored layers. Ellwood loves music, and the music for their wedding was very important to him. He was determined to find just the right song for their first dance as husband and wife. His selection was “One in a Million” by Larry Graham.

Mr. and Mrs. Ellwood Oscar Jones Jr. are wished all the joy and peace that life can bring!
