The 18th edition of Philadelphia Qfest will showcase107 films that include 42 feature films, 13 documentaries and 52 short films along with seven world premieres, one North American Premiere, two U.S. premieres, 16 East Coast premieres and 26 Philadelphia premieres. This year, QFest will introduce over 80 filmmakers, directors, producers and actors from all over the world to the city’s LGBT, arts and film communities.
When possible, guests are invited to introduce their film, participate in Q&A sessions immediately following, and further promote and discuss their film via events and programs that take place during the 12-day festival.
“Like clockwork, every December for the past 18 years, I begin compiling all the possible feature films for the upcoming QFest and always panic,” said Qfest artistic director Ray Murray. “Will there be enough quality films to fill our 11-day festival? And every year the answer is ‘Yes!’ Especially this year, we sadly had to reject several outstanding films because of slotting restraints. The 55 features from 26 different countries represent, to me, some of the best in international LGBT films for 2012.”
QFest will feature LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) comedy, drama and romance, while also tackling the hot-button issues of immigration and the legalization of same-sex marriage. “Every year we uncover common themes which run through several of the selections,” explained Murray. “This year gay marriage is examined — both in serious and comedic ways.”
The 2012 Philadelphia Qfest runs from July 12 to July 23. Screening locations are the Ritz East Theatre 1 and 2 and the Ritz at the Bourse. For more information on QFest, visit www.qfest.com or call (267)765-9800 or follow the festival on Twitter: @QFEST and Facebook: www.facebook.com/qfestphilly.
