Deadly weekend takes seven lives

The killing of police officer Moses Walker was one of seven murders that were committed over a very violent weekend in Philadelphia that raised the number of homicides in the city to 230 as of Tribune press time.

On Aug. 2 at 1:19 a.m. in the 2100 block of Natrona Street, Christopher Jordan, a 33-year-old Black male, was shot several times in the face and chest. Jordan managed to cling to life until Aug. 16, when he succumbed to his wounds. Jordan resided in the 3000 block of West Diamond Street.

So far police have no motive and no arrests have been made.

In an unrelated murder investigation police are also looking for suspects who gunned down a 19-year-old Black male on the 1500 block of North 29th Street.

The incident happened on Aug. 17 just before 12:30 a.m. The victim has been identified as Ibris Bilal of the 3000 block of West Master Street. Bilal was fatally wounded in the face and chest.

Also on Aug. 17 in the unit block of West Rockland Street, another young Black male was shot to death in an unrelated incident.

That victim has been identified as Brian Jones who resided at the same location. Police were called to the vicinity in response to a report of gunfire at 11:39 p.m. The responding officers found the victim on the ground dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

On Aug. 18 at 2:18 a.m. police were called to the 4900 block of Girard Avenue in response to a report of gunfire in the area. When officers arrived at the scene they found a gunshot victim who had been wounded in the head, neck and chest. He was identified as Dwayne Dixon, a 22-year-old Black male from the 600 block of Tribbett Road in Darby Township.

So far no arrests have been made and no suspects are in custody.

Gunfire exploded again on Aug. 18 at 3:40 a.m. in the 2200 block of South 63rd Street.

Responding officers found the victim and identified him as Everett Wilson, a 23-year-old Black male from the 100 block of Antler’s Lane in Blair, Delaware. Wilson had been shot in the back and arms. Police have identified a suspect in the case, but his name was not released by authorities as of Tribune press time.

In another unrelated homicide investigation, police have arrested a suspect for a deadly shooting that happened on Aug. 19 in the 1300 block of Wells Street.

The victim has been identified as Donald Mimes, 19, from the same location. Mimes had been fatally shot in the chest. Police later arrested George Cobb, a 25-year-old Black male and charged him with murder and related offenses. Cobb is from the 1400 block of Fanshawe Street.
