Funeral services were held Feb. 3 for Mark Anthony DeShields, 29, who died on January 27. Services were held at the Francis Funeral Home. The Rev. Benjiman Green officiated.
DeShields was born March 9, 1982 at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood to Vaughan Bryan and Jacqueline DeShields Bryan.
He was the eldest of four siblings.
DeShields attended Philadelphia public schools and graduated from Upper Darby High School in 2000. He went on to further his education graduating from Orleans Technical Institute carpentry program and was a graduate of the barber’s program.
He also trained at the Upper Darby Kickboxing Gym, competed in the National Silver Gloves Tournament in Kansas and placed second in the nation. He went on to compete in the Junior Olympics.
A member of the Air Force, DeShields served in the military for four years and traveled to Turkey and Saudi Arabia. He also worked as a warehouse technician. His work history also included a job at the Drug Emporium and at Mold Remediation Co., as well as various carpentry and barbershop jobs. DeShields also attended AGAPA Love Ministries.
He was married to Laura Jean DeShields on Dec. 21, 2007.
He will be remembered for his sense of humor, loving and caring ways as well as for his sense of adventure. His activities included skydiving, riding dirt bikes and motorcycles, and skiing.
He was an avid animal lover and liked to take his dog Tudah Jean for long walks in the park. He also loved going to movies and dinner at his favorite restaurant, Morton’s. He loved music, electronics, shopping, playing video games and board games. He was a family oriented homebody and liked to vacation.
DeShields was preceded in death by his grandfather, Williams DeShields Sr.
He is survived by his wife and parents; mother-in-law, Diana Newborn; sister, Tyshinda DeShields; brothers, Vaughan Jr. and Shakur Bryan; other siblings, Aisha and Dajuan Bryan and Marcus, Malika, Angelique, Dwain and Taleef; sister-in-law, Jennifer Tabassum; grandmother, Virginia DeShields; aunts, Roxanne, Pamela, Taletha, Keisha and Joyce; uncles, William, Donald, Terrence, Bilal, Victor, Khalid and Sanyika; two nephews, Semaj and Jaden; as well as a host of cousins and friends.
