Clarice Wright Meade of Philadelphia passed away on her birthday, April 5, 2012, at Abington Memorial Hospital. She was born in Philadelphia to the late Henry Wright and Ada Baskerville Wright. Mrs. Meade was the widow of the late James O. Meade.
She attended Philadelphia public schools, graduating from Roxborough High School. A licensed pharmacist, she was a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and earned a Master’s of Education degree from Temple University. She taught special education in the Philadelphia School District for 20 years and operated the Clarice W. Meade Real Estate and Insurance Company for 40 years. Mrs. Meade was the first Black female real estate and insurance broker in the city of Philadelphia. Clarice was an avid musician and played both the piano and organ. She loved all musical art forms including opera, classical music and the theater.
Clarice held memberships in Club Libra, Ladies of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa, Nation Organization of Business and Professional Women and the Metropolitan Opera Guild.
Survived by two children, Dr. Joseph Meade (Linda) of North Wales, and Patricia Meade Saddler (Eric) of Berkeley, Calif.; three grandchildren, Dana (William), Joseph (Linsey) and Eric II; and four great-grandchildren.
There will be a graveside service at noon on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at Ivy Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia. Catherine Laws Funeral Home of Chester is handling the arrangements.
