James R. Johnson, 78

James Raleigh Johnson held various positions with the federal government.

Johnson died May 5, 2012, after a lengthy illness. He was 78.

He was born Dec. 17, 1933, to the late Ernest and Daisy Johnson in Eufaula, Ala.

When Johnson, as he was affectionately known, was a young boy his parents moved from Alabama to Philadelphia. He was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System and graduated from Overbrook High School. He attended Temple University where he studied accounting.

He would go on to serve in the United States Army where he was honorably discharged in 1959. Johnson was employed by the federal government in various positions in Philadelphia as well as in Washington D.C. His last position was with the Philadelphia School District, where he retired in 1993.

Johnson married his sweetheart Sandra Archie and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a fashionable dresser and also enjoyed playing cards and socializing.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Annette.

He is survived his wife, Sandra; one brother, Eddie ; one daughter Monica; one son, Reggie; one stepson, Tobias; one grandson, Stefan; one sister-in-law Barbara; two aunts, Marion and Lucille; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be held May 14 at St. Jude Baptist Church, 632 North 38th St. Viewing will be held at 9 a.m. Services will follow at 11. Burial will be held in Rolling Green Memorial Park in West Chester, Pa.

Wood Funeral Home, Inc. handled the arrangements.
