Sophia Virginia Holley was an education specialist with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.
She died May 24, 2012. She was 84.
Holley was born in Elizabeth City, N.C., on Nov. 21, 1927.
Holley attended the public schools of Elizabeth City, N.C., and received her bachelor’s degree from North Carolina A&T State University.
In 1946, she was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Alpha Mu Chapter. In Philadelphia, she joined Xi Sigma, now the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter. She remained an active member for 60 years.
She was a devoted member of the James Varick AME Zion Church.
WURD, Jeremiah Wright, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Tribune and local television news shows were her frequent must-dos. Monique Braxton, Joyce Evans and Lori Wilson were her favorite news personalities.
She is survived by her cousins, Valeria Cherry Moore of Bronx, N.Y., Andrea Taylor Combs (Hersey) of Elizabeth City, N.C., Carolyn Riddick Booker of Monroeville and Chester Riddick Jr. of Philadelphia; goddaughter, Bennie; and other relatives and friends.
An Omega Omega service will be held by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter on June 16 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church, 1000 Wallace St. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m.
