Barbara Elaine Reed, also known as “Bobbie,” was a manager at Comcast Corporation.
Reed died July 31, 2012, in Hartford, Conn. She was 67.
“Bobbie’s life was a beacon of light and she lived each day with passion and purpose,” her family said.
She was born Dec. 24, 1944, in Jessup, Ga. She received her bachelor’s degree at Bethune Cookman College in Dayton, Fla., and a master’s in business administration from the University of Phoenix.
She married Rhyme L. Reed on Aug. 17, 1968, in Boston, Mass. Together they raised their only child, Kimberly S. Reed. She and Kimberly shared friendship, laughter, fellowship and deep sisterhood with one another.
The biggest part of Reed’s life was her faith and devotion to the Lord. She was an active member of Church of Christ, based in Hartford, Conn. When away from her home congregation, she worshipped at Sharon Baptist Church in Philadelphia.
“Barbara embodied the meaning of a ‘Proverbs 31 woman.’ She was a woman of virtue, grace, character and faith,” her family said.
“We will always remember her radiant personality, infectious charisma, philanthropic spirit super sense of style and her insatiable passion for living life to the fullest.”
Reed’s career spanned positions at the NAACP, MIT, McDonald’s Corporation – Leadership Team Eastern Region and CIGNA. For the last nine years, she worked at Comcast Corporation as a manager for talent acquisition and management. She made it a personal priority to mentor young women by coaching and grooming them to win in their professional endeavors. Throughout the years, Reed served as her daughter’s manager, traveling with her to various speaking engagements.
She was an active member of the National Association of African Americans in HR and the Urban League in Hartford, Conn., and Springfield, Mass.
Reed was initiated into the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Gamma Tau Chapter in spring of 1963. Reed was named an “Outstanding Young Woman of America” in 1971 by the national board of advisors of “Young Women of America.”
She was preceded in death by her father, Walter Lee Morris and sister, Mary Ann Morris.
In addition to her husband and daughter, Reed is survived by her mother, Mary Julia Morris; sister, Rosebud; brothers, Roscoe (Hattie), Kenny and Mitchell (Michelle); sister-in-law, Maxine; extended siblings, Diane, Terry, Fredrick and Jorey; and other relatives and friends.
Services will be held August 10 at Sharon Baptist Church, 3955 Conshohocken Avenue. Viewing is at 9 a.m. Services will follow at 10.
