Mary Elizabeth Ruffin Blackwell was a self-taught seamstress and fashion designer.
Blackwell died July 8, 2012. She was 100.
Blackwell was born Feb. 17, 1912, to Virginia Taylor Ruffin and Taylor Ruffin in Dougherty, Va.
She was educated in the Philadelphia public school system. She attended the Pace Alexander Horse Riding Academy.
She was a member of various organizations including the Guys and Dolls African-American Social Club, the National African-American Bridge Club, the Phillies Social Club and the “It’s a Family Affair” community organization.
Her family said Blackwell was an excellent gourmet cook, a world traveler and a community steward.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Harvey Blackwell.
Blackwell is survived by her sister, Karrie Moore, and five generations of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held July 13 at Mt. Laurel Cemetery.
