Freire Charter’s Woods one of league’s top scorers

The Public League has some terrific players who can put the ball in the basketball. Chelsea Woods, Freire Charter’s 5-foot-10 junior guard, is one of the best players. Woods is averaging 23 points a game and recently eclipsed the 1,000-point mark, becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer. She currently has 1,045 career points.

“It’s a good accomplishment,” Woods said. “In ninth grade, I always wanted to be in the 1,000 points club and now that it happened it’s nice to be there. I scored off jumpshots every now and then. I got the rebounds and put it back up. I like my jumpshot, but whenever I see an opportunity I go to the basket.”

Woods is a tremendous player. However, she has some pretty good teammates who have contributed to her success.

“I have some great teammates like Chantel (Thomas) and Zahkeyah (Allen),” Woods said. “They’re all good shooters. They all help me out. It’s nice playing with all of them.”

Woods has learned quite a bit about the game from Terron Younger, Freire Charter head coach, who has developed a number of great players over the years.

“He’s a very good coach,” Woods said. “I’ve gotten better since the ninth grade and everyone on the team has gotten better and grown up. He’s helped me a lot.”

The league playoffs are not that far away. Freire Charter hopes to make a run in the postseason.

“I think everyone is very passionate about making it to the playoffs,” Woods said. “Everyone is working harder. I know our team lost a lot of seniors last year. I know a lot of other schools have, too. So, it’s very much different than it was last year. I’m looking forward to playoffs.”

The scoring ability of Woods should help Freire Charter land a spot in the playoffs.
