Joe Garrett shares bond with daughter

Joe Garrett had quite a career as a basketball player. Garrett played for Roman Catholic and West Philadelphia High Schools. He was one of the few schoolboy players to win a Catholic League and a Public League championship.

Garrett, a 6-foot-8 forward, had some great moves around the basket. In 1974, he played on Roman Catholic’s league championship team before transferring to West Philadelphia. Of course, he played on the Speedboys 1977 Public League title team, which was ranked No. 1 in the country. West Philadelphia finished the season with an impressive 30-0 record that year.

Garrett played with All-Americans Gene Banks and Clarence Tillman along with league standouts Darryl Warwick, Mike Nichols, Mike Powell and Vincent Ross. Joe Goldenberg was the head coach.

After that, Garrett played for Texas El Paso and later had a lengthy professional basketball career in Europe. He’s now using his basketball knowledge and experience in coaching. Garrett is the head girls’ basketball coach of Communications Tech, where he has a chance to coach his daughter, Bryce Garrett.

“It’s been nice coaching Bryce,” Garrett said. “She’s played some good basketball for us. We just clinched our third straight (Public League A/AA White) division title. We had a big win over Parkway West. Bryce played well.

“It’s great coaching her, but it’s nice to be able to work with all the kids. We have some great players on the team. Khidijah Gardner has played some good basketball for us. It’s very rewarding to see them do well.”

Garrett, a 5-foot-6 sophomore, received All-Public League honors last season. She has learned a lot playing for her dad. She also knows about his playing career.

“I know he was a great player,” Garrett said. “I heard about how well he played when he was in school. My dad has been a big help to me. He has taken a lot of time with me. He’s helped me become a better player.”

Garrett and his wife, Silina, have five daughters. Brooke Garrett plays basketball for Cheyney University. Biannca Garrett is a member of Lincoln University’s track and field team.

“My wife and I are really proud of all our daughters,” Garrett said. “They’re all in school doing well. They all played for me at Communications Tech.”

The league playoffs are right around the corner. Bryce Garrett is looking forward to playing in the postseason.

“We have some great teams in the Public League like Prep Charter, Freire Charter, Central, Imhotep Charter and a few others,” she said. “I’m really excited about getting to the playoffs. It should be a lot of fun.”
