DE Mackey ready for Army-Navy

Army-Navy is always one of the country’s most popular college football games of the season. The Black Knights (2-9) will battle the Midshipmen (7-4) on Saturday, Dec. 8, at Lincoln Financial Field. The kickoff is set for 3:10 p.m. and the game will be televised on CBS3.

Jarrett Mackey, Army defensive end, doesn’t have to be told how big a game this is for him and his teammates. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound junior, will be well-prepared for this contest.

“You know the stakes that are on the line,” Mackey said. “This game is one of the biggest games in the nation. It’s a rivalry game that competes with no other rivalry game. When you come to this game, you have to step your game up to the next level. You can’t explain it. You just have to be there.”

This is the 84th year the Army-Navy game will be played in Philadelphia. It has also been played in New York and Baltimore over the years.

Mackey, a Snellville, Ga., native, has 21 total tackles on this season, including a career-high 13 tackles against Ball State. He fondly remembers is first Army-Navy experience.

“I started here as freshman in Philadelphia,” Mackey said. “It feels comfortable. It feels like you’re playing ball in your backyard. You feel like you’re playing at home. You got your fans here. I’ll have a lot of family coming up for the game. I have family all over the East Coast. They’ll be coming up from Virginia and Georgia.”

The winner of the Army-Navy game will receive the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, which is given every year to the winner of the football game among the three service academies and is named in honor of the President of the United States. Navy has captured the honor 12 times. Army has won it on six occasions. This year’s contest is the first time since 2005 that the trophy will be on the line for the Army-Navy game.
