Shawn Wilson, Malvern Prep’s outstanding running back, has been selected to represent his country in the Global Bowl in Rome, Italy. Wilson is one of 40 high school seniors from the United States who will play for Team Stars & Stripes against an Italian National 19 and under team.
The team will travel to Italy on April 14. They will play in the all-star game on April 21 and return home the following day. The game will be played at Via dei Campi Sportivi in Rome. Wilson is looking forward to this rare opportunity to play with other scholastic standouts from this area as well as around the nation in Italy.
“It’s 40 seniors from all over the country,” Wilson said. “We’re going to play against the National 19 and under team for Italy. Basically, the process selection included student athletes from all over the country who were doing well on and off the field. I found out about it a month ago. I’m very excited. It’s a wonderful opportunity to represent the United States. It’s pretty amazing to be able to play football overseas. It should be a lot of fun.”
Wilson lives in East Oak Lane and grew up playing football with the Mt. Airy Bantams, one of the best youth league football programs in the city.
When it comes to football, Wilson has a good foundation. He had a terrific senior year at Malvern Prep. He led Malvern Prep (9-2 overall, 5-0 league) to the Inter-Ac League championship. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound senior, had 117 carries for 793 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. He also led the team in scoring with 72 points.
In addition to his football prowess, Wilson has a 3.9 grade point average in the classroom. He will attend Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. The team plays in the Centennial Conference.
“College football is always a goal for me as well as the education,” Wilson said. “I chose Dickinson because athletically it fits my style of play. The main goal is academics. I think the academic program is outstanding. I’m just blessed that I’m able to compete in the classroom. They’re a top 10 school in the country. They also have one of the top law schools in the country. I’m just honored to be a part of that.
“I’m going to major in international business management and business law. The top agent in the NBA is Leon Rose. He went to my school. He’s an alumnus at Dickinson. He runs an internship program for people interested in being (a sports agent).”
Wilson seems to be putting the finishing touches on a brilliant high school career with a trip to Italy to play in a major scholastic all-star game as well as selecting Dickinson College, where he will continue to play football and receive a good education. He will have a lot of great experiences to share with his family and friends.
NOTES: The other local players who will play in Italy with Wilson are Tyler Mercer, Penn Charter; Julian O’Neill, Episcopal Academy; Pat Funchion, Cardinal O’Hara; Dave Faraldo and Eric Condon, Father Judge. Former Episcopal Academy head coach Bill Gallagher will coach the linebackers and running backs.
